About
This is the primary site for the U.C. Berkeley OPENet research group.
Our main goals are to investigate new architectures and techniques for
flow-based routing, layer-7 switching, and hybrid server/router platforms.
Our recent focus is on integrating high-speed networking with wide-area
storage area networking protocols such as iSCSI.
This research is funded by DARPA and Nortel Networks.
Research Testbed
Because we are supported by Nortel, we have the unique opportunity to
perform most of our research on real hardware. Our testbed currently sits
in Soda Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. As you can see in the picture
below, we have two carrier-class routers (Passport 8600's), four Alteon
184 Web Content Switches, two Integrated Service Directors (iSDs), and
roughly ten programmable Bay Networks L2/L3 routing switches. We also
have over 10 PCs to act as clients in our experiments. Much of this research
testbed is interconnected with gigabit ethernet (over fiber), including
connections to several of the PCs.
